Government Urged to Protect SME Support Organisations and Training Schemes

Many UK business owners are apprehensive as to whether spending cuts will see business support organisations and training schemes scrapped.

The future of organisations like Business Link and the Chambers of Commerce was one of the most frequently expressed concerns by SMEs in the latest BusinessWings survey.

UK Company Administrations down 46%

Analysis of administration figures for the first quarter of the year by Deloitte, the business advisory firm, highlights a 46% drop in the number of companies falling into administration in Q1 this year compared with the same period a year ago. This is also down 22% compared with the same period in 2008. Furthermore from October to March a total of 1154 companies went into administration - the fewest in this six month period of any of the last four years.

UK Business Failures in 2009 Buck Recessionary Trend

The total number of UK business failures reached 26,165 in 2009 an increase of 16 per cent compared to the previous year and up by 59 per cent compared to pre‐recession levels in 2007. Surprisingly, business failures declined since peaking in the first quarter of 2009 – well before economic output stabilised, according to the latest Industry Watch report by accountants and business advisors, BDO LLP.

UK Double-Dip Avoided but Risks to the Economy Remain

Results from the Quarter 1 2010 British Chambers of Commerce Economic Survey show that the UK’s upturn is still on course and the economy has not slipped back into recession. However, the recovery is weak and serious risks of a setback remain.
