Accountants - Is This Right?

A survey released this week by Forum of Private Business and CreditPal on the importance of management accounts (http://www.smallbusinesssuccess.biz/forum/blog.php?b=509) revealed that only 15% of respondents said their accountant had been the main influence behind producing these figures.

Given how immensely powerful and useful management accounts can be (if collated and analysed correctly) is this really right? Do 85% of accountants not recommend production of monthly or quarterly figures?

I can understand (to a degree) why very small business may not wish to go that far but given the insight gained into what is going on in your business I see this as a no brainer.

As an accountant I always recommend that clients keep on top of their records. This way even basic management accounts can be prepared. This is certainly a lot easier if you use a package based accounting system.

Unfortunately, it seems no matter how often the accountant tells a client to do something they still don't do it! I try to advise people to employ a bookkeeper at the very least if time is an issue.
