Picture this, you're sitting quietly at your desk getting on with some paperwork, or doing something productive and the phone rings...

Great, another job coming in you think to yourself, so you pick up the phone only to hear,

"Good morning/afternoon, I'm calling from xxxxxxxx I'd like to speak to the owner/manager/whoever deals with yyyyy".

Before you have a chance to utter a single word, they're off and running through their script trying to sell you something else you don't want or need, whether it's to advertise somewhere, they guarantee that I'll be on the top of google, etc etc

I've just taken another call (fifth) from a company offering me something - (I won't go into details, I don't want to end up in a liabel case) - Two weeks ago I said "NO", a couple days later I said "NO", the same afternoon - you get the picture...

Today I just told the latest caller "NO", but instead of using just one word I used two, can you guess what they were? (Clue - second word was off :) and no I wasn't very polite!!)

How do you deal with them?

PS sorry if it was you that I told to @#*$ this morning. :D

Hi Rod
my heart goes out to you on this subject, but i have two ways of dealing with them, if they do not take no for an answer the first time.

1) I say you shouldnt be calling this number as it is logged on the TPS (telephone preference service - run by BT)

2) As soon as they say we are calling from xxxx i just hang the phone up, both guarentee they dont call again.

Maybe you should try these ;)

My favourite response was to put the receiver down on the desk and carry on working ... they soon got the message that I wasn't there and not my phone bill after all!

I take one of two options.

Keep saying 'hello! hello! can you hear me?' and then eventually put the phone down or dont say anything at all like Rob.

They do tend to call back a couple of times but to be honest its just funny listening to them :D

If they ask for the owner or whatever I ask them what its regarding (just to make sure its not a real call) and then pretend to put them through. Obviously just cutting them off in reality. When they call back I will know its junk and tell them that the person they need is busy.

I think your response should be tailored to how fed up you are feeling that day :)
