For the second time now I have discovered a a competitor website has 'lifted' one of my expensively obtained images. What are my rights here & how best to go about getting them removed and is there any way of stopping this happening?

Interesting question especially as the net is so 'open'. I frequently have ebook covers designed for the ebooks I sell and whilst they are free for affiliates to use I would also be annoyed if others snatched them off my site.

However, I just did a quick search and found these two links:

http://ask.metafilter.com/56528/How-do-I-copyright-original-artwork-on-my-web-site

http://www.keytlaw.com/Copyrights/cheese.htm

I am sure there is also a way of 'locking' images such that no one can 'right click' and 'save as' - sure I read that somewhere.

From the links and the info in there I would start with a harsh cease and desist letter (from yourself) - that such do the trick. Otherwise, if they ignore that why not find a few forums linked with their niche and express your annoyance to the whole community!!

Chuck,

May be a stupid/obvious question but how do you do that?

he mean use watermark with adoboe photoshop on all of your images ..And also you can use some java script For locking' images such that no one can right click and save as but people can take Snap shot of that image or they can print it So watermark is still a nice way

You can also put a transparent gif over a table cell where the background is the image. I believe this is what imdb.com does.

I don't think so it brings some good effect as it does not make any sense about an image.

If your image was free to copy, anyone can do it. Add copyright to it.

I agree with rash001, you gotta get your images copyrighted so that if someone flicks it you can easily file a suit against them.. there are legal processes in internet law too you can make use of..
