Great book which I paid for and reviewed.

299 Steps To Website Heaven review (http://businesscoaching.typepad.com/business_books/2008/04/299-steps-to-we.html)

Does it work - check out Google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=business+coach&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a) for my ranking for my business coaching website. No 1 for business coach and No 2 for business coaching.

Nikki has let me offer this as a sign up gift at my Online Profits (http://businesscoaching.typepad.com/online_profits/) blog so you can tell how much I like it.

I have downloaded this e-book and I echo Paul's comments. Very good and weighing in at 150 pages that's a lot of content!

If you have not done so already I would urge you to do so in case Nikki decides to charge for it again!

Good point about checking your site - probably don't do enough of it myself. Must admit that I didn't have a problem getting the ebook and don't remember about a 'thank you' page.

That's something I do put up in respect of the free e-books you get can on the SBS site (shameless plug coming ... www.smallbusinesssuccess.biz/free_small_business_e-books.htm ). Not only are they a way of saying thank you but also the opportunity for an up-sell.

In respect of the mailing list issue the only thing I can think of is that when you unsubcribed you may have only ticked one mailing list, leaving yourself on one of the others. You can select an 'all mailing list' removal.

But I'm glad you took the trouble to register here - welcome!

This idea of inserting extra offers on thank you pages and traffic streams in general is a technique which top Internet marketing guru and author Mark Joyner calls Integration Marketing.

He published the Integration Marketing book (http://www.integrationmarketing.com/page/starterkit/p/paulsimister/sbsf) as an ebook but it is due to come out as a proper bound book soon.

This may mean that the free ebook disappears so grab it while you can.

But the technique doesn't just apply to the online world as we know it today.

Mark Joyner attributes much of Microsoft's success to the way it was able to become the de factor standard for PCs by establishing a partnership with IBM.

Interesting stuff which can get you thinking about how you can insert offers into traffic streams.

Chained, I forgot to ask why you unsubscribed from the Small Business Success list.

Rob's emails are packed with useful content.

I clicked on the link and entered my e-mail address to say I would like a copy of the book. I then received an e-mail telling me:

Thank you for requesting a free copy of the new 299 Steps to Website Heaven - we're currently finishing off the new parts and it will be emailed out tomorrow!

In order to ensure that we don't send this to anyone who doesn't really want it, we need you to verify you really did ask for this by following the instructions below:

It then showed a link to click on to confirm it was ok for them to send me information. It did not say that I was being added to a mailing list and only referred to the book requested.

I clicked on the link and a page opened to tell me that I had been subscribed to a list. Obviously I unsubscribed straight away. And to my surprise (although i dont know why) within a couple of seconds I received the copy of the e-book. Strange that - as it wasnt supposed to even be finished if the first e-mail was to be believed.

I am very annoyed at this and feel I was conned and I am afraid that this will be the last e-book I register for! I accept there is never something for nothing but not to be made properly aware of what the catch is must be wrong? There was the other e-mail from SBS which mentioned another give away and I have tried several times, without success, to access the terms and conditions for the 'hotest event of 09' and strangely the page doesnt open!

I am getting very cynical about this type of marketing every day and its obviously going to have a negative effect on those that do want to provide something useful.

(thank you for your webinar last week Paul - the one with Scott - it was very interesting and useful! and you were really quite funny ;))

Anyway moan over. Just thought you should know Rob.

thanks

Sam

Sam

I wasn't trying to be funny so you've got me worried now but I'm glad that you found the webinar useful. These are very important profit making points.

On the 299 Steps ebook, it is very good so its worth a bit of confusion in my opinion.

You may not like it but it is generally standard practice in Internet marketing to attract people by offering something free to build up an email list.

But every email should have the option for you to unsubscribe so, if you are not happy, just take that approach.

From my perspective as someone who gives away free things, it seems a bit ungrateful to grab what you can and then, despite having shown that you are interested, disappear.

All my emails try to add value with tips and pointers to freebies but I do it to try to build the relationship so that, eventually, people will buy something from me or something that I recommend.

Otherwise there is no point in people providing free information.

Paul

As I explained to Nikki via e-mail I do understand that nothing worth having comes for free BUT I felt that in this instance being added to a list was hidden and that I dont like I'm afraid.

She has explained that the e-mail re the completion of the book was an error and should have been removed but I have not yet heard from her about where it was made clear that requesting a copy of the book meant I would be added to a list? I believe in transparency and this was missing for me on this occassion.

I am sorry that you feel I am ungrateful - I believe that all I wanted was to be given a choice as to what happened with my personal contact details.

Sam,

You do raise a valid point about transparency and perhaps that can be lacking. However, as Paul mentioned handing out freebies is a valid (and successful) list building method and one that I use myself.

There is an industry best practice that all marketing e-mails have an opt-out link at the end. The better autoresponder providers will this do this automatically to ensure integrity within the industry.

As I mentioned the 'free e-book' technique is one I use and has led to a list of just over 6,000 small business owners across the globe. Sure, some do unsubscribe along the way for a variety of reasons, but the fact they come of my list is fine with me - I have given them the option and the right to exercise that option.

With all that said, if you are new to the 'grab a freebie' market then you may not know that its accepted you get added to a list - it's a payback for the provider - and that's where Sam may have a point re transparency ... must go off and have a look at the wording I'm using :o
