Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps
Have you ever wondered how, despite loving your partner, you
sometimes get totally confused by their actions? Do they wind you up and no
amount of explanation can help you get your head round why they do certain
things?
Well, if you want to unravel the mysteries of the opposite sex, and
understand why they do what they do, this is the book for you!
Written in layman’s words and in a funny style, Alan and Barbara Pease
show how, despite all attempts to bring males and females together, we are
genetically different … and don’t bother trying to change it!
The basic theme of the book is that our behaviour as men and women was
set during our ‘caveman’ years and this has dictated our way of life even
today.
The man was the hunter. He would go out all day and hunt to provide for
his family. The women would stay behind, bring up the family, bond with
other women and defend the nest. This is how we are and it is only in the
last generation that we have tried to undo thousands of years of habits.
The Pease’s explain how, because of man’s need to focus in on his prey,
he has vision which is very narrow. As a result, he will go to the fridge
and shout out that he cannot see the butter! The woman, because she had to
watch out for predators in the cave, has wider peripheral vision and will
spot the butter immediately, muttering that her husband must be blind!
Have you noticed how a man can only do one task at a time? What does he
do if the phone rings? He turns off the TV. Men cannot cope with such
distractions. This explains part of the book title, why men don’t listen. If
they are reading the paper, everything else is blocked off so he can
concentrate on the task in hand.
Women on the other hand can talk on the phone, have the TV on and do the
housework, all at the same time! The same when speaking to a group of
friends; women can speak all at once, usually on unrelated subjects and
understand everything. To men this is very confusing!
Whilst on talking - how come men, when they come home at night, just clam
up? The wife wants to talk but he just wants to sit down and stare into
space or the fire (back to our cavemen days again). The book explains that
men developed as lunch-chasers and not communicators. Their brains are not
as well developed for speech as women’s are. Whilst out hunting they were
programmed to remain silent in case of frightening off the prey. They only
communicated with other hunters in the pack by body language. This explains
why a man is quite happy to sit and think - just leave him, he’s OK!
One source of irritation to men is a woman’s inability to read a map! A
woman’s natural reaction if reading a map is to turn it upside down, so it’s
facing the direction she is going. Because of their hunting skills in
judging the speed and distance of their prey, men have developed better
spatial skills, so he can rotate the map in head.
Women need to remember when they scream at their partner about the risks
he is taking in the car, that his spatial skills are better than hers. This
means he can make decisions which may look dangerous to her. As the Pease’s
say, “When men stop asking women to navigate, everyone’s lives will be
happier, and when women stop criticising men’s driving abilities, there will
be fewer arguments.”
The book is a fascinating read. There are many examples of human
behaviour which will have you smiling as you relate to what’s going on in
your life!
