Marketing Your Website

Marketing Your Website

Having spent a huge amount of time (and probably money) on getting your web site up and running, there is nothing more frustrating than watching your visitor numbers move more slowly than the proverbial snail!

If you are new to web sites and e-commerce, then ‘Marketing Your Website’ by Tim Ireland is a great book to bring your knowledge and bank balance back to where it should be!

Written in ‘no jargon’ style, the chapters take you through a step-by-step approach on how to get your site noticed.

Search Engines can sometimes be a bit of a mystery but this chapter looks at the key components of how they work and how to submit to them. What’s useful is the outline of how the different search engines have different registration and ranking criteria, so you can tailor your submission to increase your chances of a successful listing.

If you are totally new to the game, then the section on choosing a domain name would be of interest. This section even looks at how the way letters in your business name can affect the readability of your web address.

The book includes the usual review of the importance of keywords and meta tags and is a useful reminder to everyone on how carefully planned ‘descriptions’ and keywords can help improve listings.

Many businesses think that getting your site listed is all there is to getting business, but this book considers the importance of content and presentation. A site with poor content and no real information is not going to attract repeat visits - developing ‘sticky content’ is the key to bringing people back. Poor presentation can quickly result in users clicking another address, leaving you behind. Tim Ireland says,

“Sales messages should be short and to the point and lead straight to a facility that let’s them secure your product or service.”

The book is littered with useful web addresses which are worth the asking price alone in saving research time! One problem with all books of this subject is that they quickly date. Written in 2000 the book barely touches upon pay-per-click, which is now becoming well established.

However, a good starting point for small business owners who are looking for an easy and pain-free introduction to prompting their site.
