Why Outsourcing Can Take Your Business to the Next Level

As someone who runs their own small business, I know how precious time is and how many hours can be wasted struggling with tasks that you do not have the skills or time to do properly. Whether it is handling your admin, doing the accounts or writing marketing materials; very often you are doing tasks that you did not go into business to do but they have got to be done! However, spending too much time on these activities can have a negative impact on your fee earning work. If you are focusing too much of your energy on these tasks then you are unable to take on more client work and therefore increase your income.

So how can you grow your business when your time is limited by all the other tasks that you have got to do?

Well, the answer is outsourcing.

When you first start out in business, you very often do all the tasks yourself because you have the time available and are very often working on a tight budget. But as the business grows and client work increases, there is less availability and this is when you need to start thinking about outsourcing those tasks that you either do not have the skills or time to do.

However, the idea of outsourcing can require a major shift in mindset for some business owners. The two major barriers are cost and control. Like many small business owners, you may be very protective of your business because you have built it up from scratch and this means that you can struggle with the concept of handing over control of part of your workload to a third party. However, if you want your business to expand then you have to accept that your time is limited and you can no longer do all the work.

The other barrier is cost. If you have previously done everything yourself then you may see paying an external contractor to do the same work as an additional cost which you cannot afford. However, you need to remember that when you do these tasks yourself, you are doing them at your hourly rate. And it is fair to say that for the majority of tasks that could easily be outsourced, you will pay a significantly lower rate for someone else to do it!

Therefore, outsourcing is a great solution for those small businesses that want to expand and work more effectively, but do not have the budget or facilities to take on permanent staff. By building a great team to support them, business owners will have more time and energy to focus on the work that they enjoy doing and which brings in the money.

So whether it's a virtual assistant to handle your admin, a book keeper to organise the accounts or a consultant to oversee your marketing, outsourcing these kinds of activities is essential if you want to take your business to the next level.
